Twitter Has Officially Tipped

Started by Nick O'Neill · 10 months ago

Well it looks like Twitter has officially tipped. Personally, I have noticed a jump in the size of my Twitter followers over the past few days. Just today I’ve had 15 people add me and the day isn’t over. This is similar numbers to what Alley Insider is reporting. Brian ... Continue reading »

  • I have gotten more new followers in the last 24 hours than any other period. Woke up today and had 10 noticed sitting in my Inbox. The problem? 8 of them were marketing-only, commercial accounts. They weren't there to join any conversation. They were there to shout over it.

The beauty of Twitter is that they can shout all they want. I'm not interested, so I didn't follow them. So it's almost as if they don't exist at all.

For the record, I'm not against a company being on Twitter across the board. Zappos is innovating there, and lord knows Gary Vaynerchuk is making Twitter his bitch when it comes to WineLibraryTV. But just as I mentioned above, these folks are actively joining the conversation, so I listen. Just like in real life.
  • A lot of the reason everyone noticed so many follows is that Twitter email notifications weren't working since Friday...so all the new Follows since Friday came in late last night and early this morning.
  • I also think there was some bug of some kind that held follow notifications for a couple days: everyone has said they havent gotten very many for a few days but then got inundated with a slew of them this morning.
  • Getting tons of spammy marketing followers recently. So it's tipped toward adoption by spammy marketers. I don't think it's reached mass adoption by "regular people," who actually want to converse.
  • @Jared, that's a good point but I've actually received 15 new followers today ... ive also got emails from new followers over the weekend
  • Twitter is far from a tipping point. I think it is still sitting on the Innovator side of the adoption curve. I don't think it will cross the chasm before Facebook steps in with updates to its status and Facebook IM that will hurt Twitter quite a bit.
  • Yes, I think Twitter is in process of tipping right now. Lots of flurries, new discussions, interesting debates going on as to how to "properly use" Twitter... I'm seeing more of the big name internet marketers joining the playground of social media experts. Sure creates an interesting dynamic. :)
  • I'm not sure I like how conversations are organised in twitter. I have been using Jaiku for a while and I like that after a presence update a conversation can flow in the associated comments. As far as I can tell twitter has nothing like this.

I appreciate that maybe this is the whole point... that everything is global and has no container but, I just don't like how it works at the moment.
