Nick, are you suggesting that a social media site owner, such as myself, should also have an individual blog site via blogger.com ect...for other social media connections? If my social media site has blogging functionality should I simply be using my own profile/blog or even then still create an outside blog? I enjoyed the read and your insights.

While most of your points here are pretty simple and straightforward, in concert they provide a great guide to those just starting up in the space.

I'd add one more: track metrics. Page views, unique visitors to your blog, comments left, people following you on twitter, how many people have burned your feeds, etc. This will allow you with some hard statistics as to how your efforts are progressing.

@4four1ones, I wrote is more customizable than Wordpress.com blogs. Wordpress.com blogs are not hosted on your server. I have a wordpress blog as well and it works great, I wouldn't switch to anything else but I know how to manage my server. Most people don't and that's why I suggested blogger is better than the Wordpress hosted Wordpress.com blogs.

I'm not sure that I agree that Blogger is a better choice due to customizing options against the Wordpress platform. Wordpress is the forerunner of all blogging platforms with the most plug-ins available. I am interested to find out why you think Blogger is better. Blogger is free, yes, but you point out that you should get a domain. Now you can point a domain to a blogger page but I would rather have full control of my blog with a wordpress platform installed. Just my 2 cents.
