I didn't know all the details about Soulja Boy's story, so this was very informative. I think Social media already plays a big and growing part in music for emerging artists and I expect the rate of growth to increase for exceptional music. As we know, Soulja Boy's story, as exciting as it appears, is not yet the norm (e.g. emerging artist becoming a social media sensation/icon), but is a great example of what is possible... and again, I believe we'll see more and more evidence proving the possibilities are expanding daily.

When my band, State of Man, launched our first website 8 years ago (under a different band name), few artists saw the sort of worldwide traffic possible today. Thanks to our blog (stateofman.wordpress.com), our State of Man TV channel on Youtube (www.youtube.com/stateofmantv), our main site (www.stateofmanmusic.com) and our online fan club (www.reverbnation.com/stateofman) that integrates just about every social media platform we've signed up for, we're seeing our traffic grow everyday. One year from now, who knows, maybe we'll be an internet sensation, too!

Re: Soulja Boy Tell’Em - Social Media SuperStar

I totally agree social media will define what the future of the music industry is. Soulja Boy gets it primarily because he is young and plays in this space from a consumer perspective so he knows what works, he knows what his peers will respond to. I also just wanted to make note that while Soulja Boy gained his success from using social media he hasn't stopped, in fact he will be releasing a cartoon on the web in addition to many other things he has done thus far, We've covered him often on my site:

http://www.blackweb20.com/?s=soulja+boy&x=0&y=0...

Re: Soulja Boy Tell’Em - Social Media SuperStar

I cannot wait to see the video of this. i love the fact that @MCHammer is on Twitter.

Myspace is a no brainer for musicians; but it's not always used to stay as "in touch" with fans as facebook/twitter could be used. The more content you give your fans, the more tweets, blog posts, etc. the more times they'll come back and check you out, think about you, talk about you and spread their enthusiasm about you!
