Social Times: First Steps in Twitter

    Hi Nick,

good post. In reference to a client that will automatically shorten url's, I have started using snitter. It is an Adobe Air App so it is cross platform and built in it has a nice url shortener for you to use. It is quite nice, lots of keyboard shortcuts, etc

    regards,

So many smart people like it, and there is so little to lose by trying it out, I say "fake it until you make it".

I'd heard about it a good year or so before I used it. By then, I had a half-dozen friends (mostly the techie coworkers at Mindshare/Virilion) on the service.

Now, I have posted 4,598 Tweets in about 7 months.

Dan - I totally hear you on this. You make a number of good points. I have also "squatted" on my own account for months, updating it only when going to workshop sessions on or about new media stuff/twittering. Until just a few weeks ago...

I have taken the wise counsel of friends and colleagues who are active Tweeters (not to be confused with Tweakers) and let these two tenants guide me:

    1. Twitter when you are doing something interesting, or have something interesting to say to a friend or your micro community. At a concert, watching breaking news, etc.

    2. Twitter AT people, like you would a rolling IM-meets-email convo. This can be endless fun.

I also highly recommend the Twitterberry App if you have a blackberry... great for when you are in lines or on the metro. Easy to update, see what friends are up to, etc.

PS - I am as verbose as they come and if I can do it in 140 chars, so can you! Best of luck :-) L.

Thanks all for your kind words and helpful suggestions!

As I just Twittered, my concerted effort to try Twitter is off to a bad start because I'm without my phone charger for a few days. I'm under self-imposed limits on phone usage...

Dan, been reading your articles and have to write telling you I also love your writing style, very funny and very real. I recently started twittering myself and find it really good fun. Keep up the good work!
