  • Interesting post Anthony.

I'm having trouble understanding if you're talking about marketing a product via social networking, or marketing yourself and your own profile.

In the case of your own profile, I'm sensing that you think that the persona you create is more than a representation of yourself, and that special effort should go in to developing the way in which other people experience you as a person via social networking. I don't disagree, I just wonder if it's a good thing. I never signed up to Facebook to develop a fantasy version of myself. To me, it's about communication. It feels like we're using it to define, or re-define, or even create ourselves. We update our status when we want people to know things about us and what we're doing and to make ourselves feel important.. but no bonds or connections are formed.

I think that the only real platform for two people to form a connection is real life; face-to-face. Anything that we replace that with has the risk of thwarting our efforts to truly network and make connections.

I wonder how other people feel about that dichotomy.
