Social Times: Can Anybody Compete With Facebook & MySpace on Mobile?

I think there's only room for a service that connects strangers to each other based on location info. Facebook is going to avoid doing this as there goal is represent your real-world relationships. Loopt Mix is a perfect example of this. Loopt tried to be your mobile social network for your real buddies, couldn't get critical mass and is now trying to connect random people with Loopt Mix.

    Excellent post Nick...

I share your view that Facebook and MySpace are the market leaders here and will be tough to beat. On a related note, the Blackberry application for Facebook has already been downloaded over 2 million times in a year. As we see more corporate folks with Blackberrys embrace social communications, Facebook's lead will continue to grow.

Great post. When I co-founded MocoSpace 3 years ago, I never prefaced our success on the failure of MySpace or Facebook any more than Amazon prefaces its success on Sears's or even Sears.com's failure. I think there will be a few big winners in mobile among which I would count MySpace and Facebook, and also MocoSpace. Although not a household name with a huge online membership to leverage, MocoSpace's mobile site has incredible levels of engagement that argue very favorably for the strengths of our product.
