I only received SMS notifications from a couple of the folks I follow, but I did use the UK SMS service to interact with a number of other tools, like GCal and Toodledo. Having that disappear is going to hurt, no question.
I think Twitter really blew it by discontinuing outgoing UK SMS with no warning and no option for users willing to pay for it. Hell, anyone who was using the UK gateway was already paying international rates to tweet from their mobile phones anyway. I certainly would have been happy to pay my way (and expected to eventually, in fact), but the way this went down makes me question whether or not I'll be able to support the service in the future.
